Red

Selected for Atlante dell’Arte Contemporanea no. 74 (Giunti Editore) and projected on large screens at the MoMA in New York on June 19, 2026, RED represents a pivotal point in my ongoing visual investigation into fractures and horizons.

In this work, a field of vibrant, absolute red rises above a complex, stratified material section of the canvas, dominated by earthy tones and agitated textures. Separating, and simultaneously uniting, the two areas is a sharp horizon line: a fracture that does not signify a definitive rupture, but rather a threshold of transition. It is precisely within this boundary that the core of my theoretical and formal research resides.

The compositional balance of RED draws on the Japanese conception of time and space expressed by the term ma (間). Ma is not mere emptiness or absence, but the suspended interval between things, the temporal space that gives meaning and rhythm to the flow of existence. On the canvas, the dividing line between the lower terrestrial matter and the upper chromatic purity becomes a generative space. It becomes a site of waiting and possibility, where the fracture transforms into a horizon of spiritual and intellectual renewal.

Within the Sensitive Horizons series, RED stands out for its dramatic intensity. While other works explore more nuanced tonal variations, here the dichotomy between the visual silence of pure color and the primordial energy of matter is pushed to its extreme. The fracture ceases to be a wound and becomes a temporal hinge: a sensitive horizon where the viewer is invited to linger, finding in the “void” of that boundary the measure of a new beginning.
