Artist Journey

Antonella Quacchia

A Dialogue Between Science, RESILIENCE, and Form

My artistic practice is rooted in a life shaped by separations, migrations, and curiosity. This journey began in Gorizia, a divided city, and unfolded through adoption, emigration to Brazil, and decades of international collaboration. These fractures and movements left profound traces, but also revealed a truth: trauma can be transformed into possibility, and displacement into creative strength.

After an influential career in Computer Science, working at CERN and the International Labour Organization, I chose in 2012 to dedicate myself fully to the canvas. This transition deeply informs my work, where abstract expressionism meets the structured inquiry of science. My years at CERN, immersed in the search for invisible forces beyond absolutes, taught me to perceive the tension between structure and fluidity, much like matter’s dual nature as both wave and particle. This scientific lens infuses my compositions with layered interpretation and spatial resonance.

My art also carries the imprint of nearly three decades of collaboration among colleagues from 187 countries at the ILO, where cultural diversity and human nuance enriched my understanding of identity and belonging. What once felt like “non‑belonging” has become a source of creative resilience, resonating with collectors who value both intellectual depth and emotional authenticity.

Visually, my language evolves through series such as Signs and Symbols, which recombine fragments of life into essential forms; Floating Thoughts, which explores the duality of life and death; and Our Planet, where boundaries transform into horizons of possibility. The encounter with epoxy resin in Serendipity reflects my embrace of unpredictability, while works like Stories and those addressing Mediterranean pollution expand my practice to collective concerns, giving voice to endangered habitats and threatened seas.

I employ a tactile, mixed‑media technique, combining acrylics, oils, marble powder, resin, and recycled materials, to explore emotional resonance and the complexities of the inner landscape. My influences range from the spatial sensitivity of Zao Wou‑Ki and the emotional gravity of Mark Rothko to the gestural energy of Willem de Kooning and the tactile richness of Pierre Soulages.

Today, my paintings and sculptures resonate with collectors and curators seeking museum‑quality works that blend aesthetics, intellectual inquiry, and cultural depth. Each piece is an invitation to explore ambiguity, embrace transformation, and recognize the quiet power of perspective. In my practice, limits are no longer closures, but points of departure for imagining new possibilities.
