Mare Plasticum 2
● AvailableThe sea remembers everything we throw into it.
Mare Plasticum 2 is the tween piece to Mare Plasticum 1. It the second panel in what will become a growing series of works raising awareness about plastic pollution in the Mediterranean and beyond.
Where Mare Plasticum 1 confronts you with the shock of recognition as your reflection suddenly appearing among the debris, Mare Plasticum 2 invites a slower, deeper looking.
The resin layers here shift from the deep blue of open water toward the paler, more uncertain tones of shallower seas to remind of the coastal waters where most plastic accumulates, where fish feed, and children swim.
The Fibonacci spiral organises the embedded plastic fragments taken from household waste, the kind found in every kitchen and bathroom in the world. Ordinary objects made monstrous by their displacement.
The mirror panel ensures you cannot stand before this work without becoming part of it.
I was a scuba diver for many years, and I have seen what lies beneath beautiful surfaces.
I made these works because I could not unsee it. And because I believe that neither would you.
